How easy it is to reach your property matters. It affects how often you use it, how rentable it is, and ultimately its value. Gstaad is more accessible than most people expect, but it is not on any major transport corridor. Understanding the options is part of the buying decision.
By Train
The MOB and Golden Pass Express
Gstaad is served by the Montreux-Oberland Bernois (MOB) railway, one of Switzerland's most scenic routes. The line connects Montreux on Lake Geneva to Zweisimmen in the Bernese Oberland, passing through Gstaad.
The Golden Pass Express, launched in 2022, is the flagship service. It runs the full Montreux-Interlaken route with a gauge-change system at Zweisimmen, eliminating the need to change trains.
Key train connections:
| Route | Approximate Time |
|---|---|
| Montreux to Gstaad | 1h 45min |
| Gstaad to Zweisimmen | 15min |
| Zweisimmen to Spiez | 30min |
| Zweisimmen to Bern | 1h 15min |
| Gstaad to Interlaken (via Zweisimmen) | 1h 30min |
From Major Cities by Rail
| From | Route | Approximate Time | |---|---| | Bern | BLS to Zweisimmen, MOB to Gstaad | 2h-2h 30min | | Geneva | Train to Montreux, MOB to Gstaad | 3h-3h 30min | | Zurich | Train to Spiez/Zweisimmen, MOB to Gstaad | 3h-3h 30min | | Lausanne | Train to Montreux, MOB to Gstaad | 2h 30min | | Basel | Train to Bern/Spiez, connection to Gstaad | 3h 30min |
The train journey is beautiful but not fast. For regular commuters, driving is usually quicker.
Gstaad Station
Gstaad has its own train station in the village centre, a short walk from the Promenade. Schönried, Saanenmöser, and Zweisimmen each have their own stations on the same line. Rougemont is also served. Lauenen has no rail connection.
By Car
Driving is the most practical option for most property owners.
Drive Times
| From | Distance | Approximate Time | |---|---| | Bern | ~85km | 1h 15min-1h 30min | | Geneva | ~170km | 2h-2h 15min | | Geneva Airport | ~175km | 2h-2h 15min | | Zurich | ~210km | 2h 30min-3h | | Zurich Airport | ~215km | 2h 30min-3h | | Lausanne | ~100km | 1h 30min | | Montreux | ~60km | 1h | | Interlaken | ~70km | 1h-1h 15min | | Thun | ~65km | 1h |
Routes
From Bern/Thun: A6 motorway to Spiez, then via Wimmis and the Simmental valley (Erlenbach, Boltigen, Zweisimmen) to Gstaad. The last 40km from Spiez is a scenic valley road. Well maintained, but single carriageway.
From Geneva/Lausanne: Motorway to Montreux or Aigle, then the Col des Mosses or Col du Pillon. The Col des Mosses route (via Château-d'Oex) is the more common approach. The Col du Pillon (via Les Diablerets) is an alternative. Both are mountain passes that can be slow in poor weather.
From Zurich: A1 to Bern, then as above. Or via the Brünig Pass to Interlaken and then Spiez.
Winter Driving
Winter tyres are mandatory in practice (not technically by law, but you will be found negligent without them). Chains should be carried from November to April. The approach roads are generally well maintained and cleared, but:
- The Col des Mosses and Col du Pillon can close temporarily in heavy snowfall
- The Simmental road occasionally has weather-related delays
- A 4x4 or AWD vehicle is strongly recommended
By Air
Commercial Airports
| Airport | Distance to Gstaad | Drive Time | |---|---| | Bern (BRN) | ~85km | 1h 15min | | Geneva (GVA) | ~175km | 2h-2h 15min | | Zurich (ZRH) | ~215km | 2h 30min-3h | | Sion (SIR) | ~110km | 1h 30min |
Geneva is the most commonly used airport for international arrivals. It has the widest range of direct flights and is well connected to the motorway toward Montreux and the Saanenland.
Bern is the closest but has limited scheduled services (mainly to a few European destinations).
Zurich is the furthest but has the most international connections, including long-haul routes.
Saanen Airport (LSGK)
Gstaad has its own airfield: Saanen Airport, located between Gstaad and Saanen, approximately 3 minutes from the village centre. It is one of the most exclusive small airports in Switzerland.
Key facts:
- Runway: 600m grass strip (800m with overrun)
- Elevation: 1,003m
- Aircraft: Suitable for light aircraft and small turboprops. Not suitable for jets.
- Operations: VFR (visual flight rules) only. No instrument approaches.
- Availability: Generally open year-round, but weather-dependent. Mountain weather can close the airport at short notice.
Saanen Airport is used by private pilots and for helicopter transfers. It is not a viable alternative to commercial airports for scheduled travel.
Private Aviation and Helicopter
For UHNW clients, helicopter transfers are the fastest option:
| Route | Approximate Flight Time |
|---|---|
| Geneva Airport to Gstaad | 35-40min |
| Zurich Airport to Gstaad | 45-50min |
| Bern Airport to Gstaad | 20min |
| Sion Airport to Gstaad | 15-20min |
Helicopter landing pads are available at Saanen Airport and at some private properties (subject to planning permission). Several operators serve the Gstaad market.
For those with access to private jets, the nearest jet-capable airports are Bern and Sion. From either, a helicopter transfer or car service completes the journey.
Transfer Services
Several private transfer companies serve Gstaad:
- Airport transfers: CHF 400-800 from Geneva, CHF 600-1,000 from Zurich (luxury vehicles)
- Helicopter transfers: CHF 3,000-6,000+ depending on origin
- Local taxis: Available but limited. Pre-booking is essential in high season.
Most property owners with second homes arrange standing relationships with a preferred driver or transfer service.
How Transport Affects Property Value
Access matters for property values in several ways:
- Proximity to Gstaad station adds a premium for properties in the village. Walk-to-station locations are valued by buyers who prefer not to drive.
- Road access quality matters for hillside and rural properties. A steep, narrow access road with difficult winter conditions will affect both value and usability.
- Rental potential is higher for properties that are easy for guests to reach. Clear directions, good parking, and proximity to the village or lifts all help.
- The helicopter question. Having a property where helicopter access is feasible (flat garden, no noise restrictions) is valued by some UHNW buyers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I commute from Gstaad to Bern? It is possible but demanding. The drive is 1h 15min each way, the train approximately 2h 15min. Zweisimmen is a better base for Bern commuters.
Is Gstaad hard to reach in winter? Not usually. The main roads are well maintained and cleared. But mountain weather is mountain weather. Plan for occasional delays and carry chains.
Do I need a car? For year-round living, yes. Public transport within the Saanenland is limited. In high season, a free shuttle connects the main villages, but it does not replace a car.
How do most international buyers arrive? Fly to Geneva, drive or transfer to Gstaad (2-2.5 hours). Some use helicopter transfers for speed and convenience.
Is the Golden Pass Express worth taking? Absolutely. One of the most scenic train journeys in Switzerland. Not the fastest way to arrive, but by far the most beautiful.
